In 2004 the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture made available funding from a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to promote public art in local neighborhoods. After a competitive process, the Sherman Heights Neighborhood Design Arts Program (SHNDAP) team's design for a stylized eagle with semicircular panels with a Cesar Chavez quote in English and Spanish was chosen as the winner. The art team, led by artist Mario Lara, worked with the City, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), San Diego Trolley, and SANDAG to install this artwork in conjunction with the MTS upgrade to the trolley station. This upgrade included new acorn-style lights, four rain shelters, and 16 seating elements with mosaic designs. The CCDRC supports this project that brings additional visibility to our neighborhood to all those who ride the Orange Line.
